“The alto parts in Monteverdi lie so low that I often have no choice but to switch completely to chest voice. Clearly, Monteverdi must have had a specific vocal color in mind, but the alto part feels often exposed and fragile. Constant switching between chest and head voice is technically exhausting, but the vocal challenges are definitely outweighed by the beauty of the ensemble sound.
I have sung in chest voice before, but mainly in pop music; I even considered studying pop at conservatory. In order to figure out which direction I wanted to go in, I took lessons from none other than Bas Ramselaer! I finally chose to specialize in classical music as countertenor, but I continue to perform in the pop circuit. This is the first project for me to unite both facets of my vocal training.”

Tobias began his musical development as a boy soprano in the Utrecht Cathedral Choir School. He continued his studies at the Utrecht Conservatory with Jon Thorsteinsson and graduated cum laude in 2017. He is currently coached by Alex Potter and Xenia Meijer and performs not only as soloist but also as an experienced choir singer. Tobias works regularly with the Dutch Chamber Choir, the choir of the National Opera, the Dutch Bach Society, Cappella Amsterdam, The Sixteen, Consensus Vocalis, and the Hieronymus Ensemble. He also works as conductor and vocal coach.
